Chapter 23

Mass Society in an "Age of Progress"

Big Ideas

  • The emergance of mass society led to the growth of industrial prosperity. This brought new products to existing markets and new markets as well. This was all shown in the Crystal Palace in Britain which was a show for all the new inovations of the time. The industrial changes were seen in the move from using iron to using steel in manufacturing, and new ways of making steel made steel lighter and stronger. this improved steel lead to the consturtion of lighter, faster and smaller machines such as engines and other machines such as railways and weapons. Also electricity was a big part of the industrial change. it became a great source of heat light and energy. Mass Society when tied in with industrial prosperity also brought about new job opportunities and work oppertunitys for women. Factorys needed labor and the owners turned to women, and gave them jobs and work. This made women a bigger part of society and it changes the norms of the time.
  • Mass society also led to population growth and urbanization. Also due to new oppernuites the birthrate rose, similar to the rise after WWII during good times. The new jobs and that were created and the new oppertunites with the factorys lead to more reason to live in urban areas. this also led to improved living conditions, there was now a need for a public sewage system to improve public health. Also new forms of energy, namely electricity allowed for water heaters to be used to have hot baths, only further improving living conditions.
  • Mass society also brought about changes in social structure of Europe. The social structure, like throughout history, was made up of the upper, middle, and lower classes. New public projects such as the park system and sports, along with other mass leisure activities, began to bring all the classes closer together. The parks became a place where the middle and upper class would mix, also sport spectacles brought people from all classes as well. The new jobs from the factories gave money to the middle and lower classes, and the improved living situation led them to use their money for leisure. The changes in work structure led to ideas such as socialism and communism where the working class ruled.
  • The growth of political democracy was also a result of mass society. Reform was seen in Britain, where there was a large push for the expansion of suffrage. The right to vote was extended during the second term of William Gladstone. He also tried to end problems with Ireland. All across Europe similar changes in government occurred in France a new constitution was written as well as in Spain and Italy. Germany unified into one big country and so did Austria-Hungry. These countries unification changed Europe and led to WWI.
